Ethics of Cesarean Section On Demand

Choice is central to women’s health and it’s a fundamental social and constitutional right for all women.

At a medical symposium the question was asked: In the 21st century, if a woman can choose to have all types of surgery, including a nose job, breast enlargement, abdominoplasty, and liposuction, all of which carry medical risk, why can’t she choose a procedure that benefits her unborn baby?

Offering cesarean section on demand can be an ethical choice, according to a Committee Opinion issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Traditionally, five general moral principles are applied to particular ethical problems:

· Autonomy: informed choice

· Beneficence: doing good

· Non-Maleficence: not doing harm

· Justice: effect on others

· Veracity: truth

The National Institutes of Health concluded that the decision to have a cesarean section on demand should be carefully individualized and consistent with ethical principles.

All women who request cesarean section on demand should be offered an opportunity to discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.
